WIN a BROMPTON BIKE

DTEP and the Brompton Bicycle Company are delighted to be working closely on a number of D&T based programmes supporting Initial Teacher Training, Engineering Diploma, Manufacturing Diploma and Product Design.

To celebrate and enhance the programme we are pleased to announce this, the first; Brompton Bicycle Design Challenge, aimed at students at GCSE and A level and Undergraduate teacher trainees.

Introduction

Over 3.5 million bicycles are sold in the UK each year, of which around one million are used for commuting the rest for mixed and general recreation. With the increasing shift to holidays at home, lower cost holidays and leisure, the idea of improving and maximising cycle ownership is a very timely and appropriate one. Mindful of that rationale, this challenge embodies the spirit and greener credentials that cycle ownership and use brings.

The Challenge and task

When transporting a Brompton Bicycle, for instance by Plane, Train, Car or boat it would be beneficial to have a protective case-like product that would protect from typical transit damage and be used to store the bike in any of its likely environments. There is a need for such a protective case to also double as a fully functional bike trailer that will attach to the rear of the bike and be used to transport light to moderate loads.

The aim is to design a trailer/case product that will adequately and safely hold a Brompton Bicycle when being used as a trailer or as a case. The case must be capable of adequately storing the external trailer parts, such as wheels and coupling devices, safely on board so that the design and function of the case is not hindered by bulky or protruding items.

Particular attention must be paid to the function and usability of the trailer and the protective case. The method of coupling the trailer to the Bicycle and how it all fits together or dismantles.

The total mass of all new product parts including a typical 11.5Kg Bike must not exceed 22Kg.

You are asked to submit up to 3 A3 sheets or equivalent of design sheets and possible digital images of a small scale model only. This can include CAD drawings, annotated sketches, JPEGS of models.

Challenge Deadline

June 14th 2010 The designs will be displayed on the DTEP website with the opportunity to be shown during D&T at the DATA conference. The winning design work may also feature in national journals and press.

Judging the designs will take place week beginning 14th June 2010 and the selectors decision will be final. The selection panel comprises senior colleagues from both the design and education world and the directors of Brompton.

Prize:

A Brompton Bike and tour of the Brompton factory.
