NEC 2010 (November 18-20th)
On the DTEP stand this November will be a selection of school exhibits as well as some of the work of this year’s TDI winners. A range of evaluation kits and practical teaching notes are also available to collect as well as advice on new materials and electronic products. DTEP have also sourced some exciting new processes and materials including metal finishing and joining techniques.

DTEP workshops at the NEC
Stirling Effort
This practical session refocuses attention on sustainable issues and energy with an elegant and practical approach to low-cost engineering. It addresses a wide range of STEM based issues. Additionally it provides opportunity to develop applied mathematic and scientific principles into a desktop product. It draws on available materials and resources and aspects of systems and control too. Delegates take back to class a working miniature Stirling engine with teaching notes.
Lights – Camera – Action
This presentation places a unique emphasis on developing animation in D&T. This is about designing and developing engineered armatures to create fabulous articulated characters for stop frame animation. Working on simple storyboards and using generic software to create mini movies featuring animals, aliens, insects and humanoids are all up for grabs. This session seizes cross-curricular opportunity, soft skills and establishes a strong cross gender appeal. A back to school assembled animated character and video teaching notes feature.
Masters of Spin
As its name implies this session is about spin. It creates an unusual desktop game – action and with a competitive edge. Using a combination of widely available materials this is a great design and make activity looking at the science of spin, flywheel effects, sub assemblies and some simple control. During the session a working launcher and spinning assembly will be built and tested using magnets, pewter and acrylics.

We look forward to seeing you there.

During the three days of the show colleagues are invited to book and attend the DTEP practical workshops – a series of intensive teach-ins. These are 45-minute D&T ‘makeovers’ where visitors can rapidly run through a practical assignment for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3, taking teaching notes and a worked example back to school or college.
DTEP Summer School 2011
Next July sees DTEP launch its first national summer school for D&T and Engineering. Teachers can look forward to an intensive summer school experience across the range of specialist areas. Thanks to the DTEP team and wider D&T supply chain support for this event, we are rekindling the creative and technical support based professional development that many will remember from just a few years ago.
With both education and industry keynotes and a comprehensive selection of practical workshops to choose from this is a free to members’ event that will prove hard to miss.
More information will be availible during and after the show
